Workers’ Compensation Underwriter

Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid Role)

Job Type: Full-Time

We are seeking an experienced Workers’ Compensation Underwriter to join a dynamic insurance team. This role is ideal for a skilled professional with a strong background in underwriting and risk assessment who is looking to contribute to a growing portfolio of business. The underwriter will focus on evaluating new and renewal business, ensuring profitability, and building strong agency relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and assess workers’ compensation insurance applications for new and renewal policies.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, coverage, and risk classification to maintain a balanced and profitable book of business.
  • Work closely with agents and brokers to develop strong professional relationships and drive business growth.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, underwriting guidelines, and company policies.
  • Review and process underwriting transactions, endorsements, and modifications efficiently.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including claims, risk control, and business development, to optimize underwriting decisions.
  • Monitor market trends and regulatory changes that may impact underwriting practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
  • Utilize underwriting tools, technology, and analytics to improve decision-making and operational efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, actuarial science, or a related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience in workers’ compensation insurance.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and industry regulations.
  • Proficiency in analyzing financial and risk data to support underwriting decisions.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Familiarity with NCCI rules, state guidelines, and rating methodologies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
